This will play pretty much any Blu-ray released before 2012.

After that its a bit hit and miss because most blu-rays released in 2012 are using BD+ protection, and as of yet only AACS has been cracked using VLC (BD+ has been cracked using libbdplus but hasn't been made public because of legal concerns). Also most of FOX blu-rays use BD+ so they don't work.

I have tested many blu-rays and nearly all of them work:

Inception
The Dark Knight
Toy Story 3
District 9
Inglourious Basterds
Watchmen
Plus many others working.

The only ones I couldn't get working are the X-MEN Quadrilogy box-set and ALIEN Anthology box-set. These are the only ones in my collection using BD+

To get Blu-ray to work in VLC run these commands:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:n-muench/vlc
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install libaacs0 libbluray-bdj libbluray1
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

Now we need to make a aacs folder and download the keys:

cd ~/
mkdir -p ~/.config/aacs/
cd ~/.config/aacs/ && wget http://vlc-bluray.whoknowsmy.name/files/KEYDB.cfg

Thats it. Blu-rays will now play.

To play them in VLC. Open VLC and hit Ctrl+d or select Media > Open Disc...

Make sure "no disc menus" is selected. Now click on Browse.. and select the disc.

Then just click play.

Ripping a Blu-ray with VLC

Load up the Blu-ray you want to rip and start up VLC. Then under Media click on Convert / Save.

The Open Media window will appear and you want to click on the Disc tab. Check BluRay, make sure the disc device field points to the optical drive with the Blu-ray and "No discs menu" is selected, then hit Convert/Save.

Next the Convert screen opens where you will want to select a location for the ripped file.

Select the destination to the location to put the ripped file make sure to give it a name and a supported extension. For this example I ripped Wanted and gave it a MP4 extension.

Then just click start.

While the Blu-ray is being ripped you will see a progress count in the main UI.

For BD+ Blu-rays you can crack them in Linux but you need to pay for a piece of software, DVDFab HD Decrypter 8 (comes with a 30 day free trial). This works fine in Wine 1.4 and can rip BD+ encrypted Blu-rays.

I been having the same issue. Its to do with Qt/VLC and scrollbars. Its a bug that needs sorting out.

Run this to start VLC with scrollbars disabled.

Code: [Select All]

LIBOVERLAY_SCROLLBAR=0 vlc

That should sort it. I ended up editing it in the launcher for VLC so I don't need to keep running that command to launch VLC without scrollbars.

You could always just remove overlay-scrollbar if you don't use them.

I have found out what the bug is. Its Qt and overlay-scrollbar. They don't play nice together.

The overlay-scrollbar's are effecting all Qt apps.

Just tested 50+ blu-rays. It seems its the ones made by FOX that don't like playing. All the others work fine.

Now to get Blu-ray menus working Smile

libbluray-bdj is the java library for the menus to work, but haven't found an player that uses it yet.
