I also agree that end users will only change background

When things are working, why do you need to disturb the settings. Developer must have thought something while creating an OS and must have reason for including / excluding certain features - this is general thinking of end user, IMO

In the past when they have been hit with malware and trojans, I have had to do research and then help.

This time I lent them my live usb and instructed them to dual boot
Showed them the forum and how people in linux world help when asked.
Showed them how to look for solutions to any problems they may have.
Found the thread showing a newbie how to update a linux system and told them to follow the instructions.

Told them to only bug me when really stuck but they know how to twist my arm to help them

Virtual or live cd, dvd or usb is not the same as seeing an installed OS in action.

Like my comment in this thread, I have shown them that in linux world, there are forums where help is available.
Maybe the smart phone generation, who are used to app stores, will see the software center or packet managers and will adopt linux as their OS.
Maybe they will discover Vanlong's thread on customising the desktop and have a go
