hi guys it's me again with another problem and it comes with a story.

first off I do know that my external ODD works fine cos it's the one I used to install Pinguy with my liliputer.

I was in the process of installing windowze as virtual machine cos I wanted to test something out. there the virtualbox detects my external ODD as CD/DVD device in the storage tree under IDE Controller so, I opened the computer browser(my computer in windows) cos I wanted to check something out but I could not see the ODD mounted or attached under devices tree.

now how do I make my system detect/mount/attach(sorry i dont know the proper terminology for it) my external ODD/CD/DVD?

HI Psychospath,

You havent made it exactly clear what your problem is. Is it that you cannot mount the drive within PinguyOS or can you not get your Windows VM to recognise the CD drive?

#i havent installed windowze via virtualbox yet cos it says "No NTDLR" upon boot but at least VirtualBox detects my ODD.

Press alt+F2 then type > gconf-editor the go to > apps > nautilus > preferences and make sure "media_automount" has a tick in it, you might want "media_automount_open" also.

PS: with the "No NTDLR" message showing, you won't be able to install Windowz cos the loader is missing, most likely because you are trying it in virtual mode!!!!. (not really sure there, just guessing!!)

I checked nautilus' preference and both automount_open and automount is ticked on default.

and I just noticed that mounting my ODD with out a disk inserted makes pinguy to recognize my ODD but once i've inserted a disk may it be CD/DVD it disappears then reappears when I eject the disk out.

HI Phycho's,

I actually had the exact same problem with my netbooks USB CD Drive a few months ago. I couldn't work out what the problem was and in the end I just gave up as it's very rare I use the CD drive anyway.

As a work around you could ISO whatever CD you are trying to use then install Furius ISO mount from the ubuntu software centre. You will then be able to mount the ISO a virtual CD drive...that's how I got around the issue on my netbook Smile

well that really sucks!

I wont be able to just insert a video DVD and watch.

i've googled this problem and seems like no one has been able to really solve it.
