Ok pretty familiar user here, been using ubuntu for quite a while, and really enjoyed pinguy in a live environment.

Built a system for it specifically, core i3 2100t, asrock mobo 16gb memory, 60gb ssd etc.

Live environment works fine, installing it and running from the HD freezes after 30 seconds or so at login screen.

So, I wanted to see if this was a hardware issue, installed ubuntu 10 and 11, ran for 1 day each, no issues, installed mint 12, ran for a day doing general testing and updating. Everything works in every other distro except pinguy.

I prefer pinguy to both, and would love to get this working... wondering if anyone has any ideas as to why pinguy would lock on boot. I am running the 64bit version since I want to be able to utilize my 16gb memory.

While seeing the spinning circle, press Esc and report the messages (best to take a picture)

Hi,

when you burnt the ISO; did you do so at the slowest possible speed??.

Did you try to boot into "Rrecovery Mode" and run "dpkg" which should fix any damaged packages??. (You might have to run "fsck" before "dpkg" appears in the recovery menu!!.)

Hi guys, thanks for the hints.

So I ran recovery mode, fsck'ed and went well and dpkg, updated a ton of stuff.

Then dropped to shell and did a apt-get update / upgrade and there was nothing broken/to be upgrade.

Did a reboot and hit esc to watch the boot process, makes it to the gnome login and only after a minute does it lock up. I can login, but shortly after, locks.

Wondering if this has anything to do with X, since recovery mode works fine and I can let it sit in shell forever.

to be more detailed, mobo is an asrock pro3, cpu is an i3-2100t
ram is 16gb ddr 1333 - ssd is a vertex2 60gb, components confirmed all good, as mentioned other linux distros run ok, and windows runs fine.
Any other ideas?

The vital differences between PinguyOS and other Ubuntu-based OS are Preload and Zram which interfere the booting-process and later on when using the system. If possible, try one of the following solutions to remove them:

+ Use synaptic

or

+ Quickly search for BootUp-Manager, fill in your passwords, and untick Preload and Zram >> Apply >> Yes

If none work, try other versions of PinguyOS http://sourceforge.net/projects/pinguy-os/files/ (I don't think it will make any difference but still worth a try)

Ok, this seems to have helped, I didn't see Zram in the bootup-manager, though I disabled preload and that seems to be helping, so far no crashes!

So it did it again on a reboot, what I ended up changing is the auto-login, and that seems to bypass the crashing, so it's something in the actual gnome login?!! crazy.

Hi,

try a full system update with these commands in a terminal:

sudo apt-get update

and:

sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

The first command updates the available packages list; the second updates the packages including any missing dependencies!!.
