Welcome to the family!!

Now, I am trying to figure out why you are having issues after installing updates. Do us a favor and please tell us the CPU, total memory, hard drive size, video memory, 64 bit or 32 bit installed, and Dual Boot or Stand Alone setup? Oh, Laptop or Desktop?

As for the look of the desktop ~ You may need to install Pinguy OS 11.04 or a previous version. The new look and feel is in conjunction with other Linux Distros. The new menu and task bar the same. My advice to you and others that are new to Pinguy or even Linux ~ Try the previous versions of Pinguy OS and then after using for awhile upgrade to the latest and greatest Pinguy OS. That is the transition that many of us have experienced. Which allows us to appreciate the hard work and dedication put into the development of Pinguy OS.

Hi LinuxGuru!! Hi Enki!! quick question to LinuxGuru, I currently run PingEEE 11.04(32Bit) on my Net Book laptop, and dual boot Pinguy 11.04(64Bit) with Ubuntu 11.10(64Bit, I think) on my Note Book laptop.
I thaught I had to do a clean install of Pinguy 11.10 Beta, are you saying that is not the case, I could "upgrade" from within the current Pinguy?? Please clarify, than you for your time Blush

Mate is a fork of gnome 2, 11.10 Mate will have updated programs and will be comfortable to people who want to stick with gnome 2

Hi Kantoquad!! Oh! ok, sorry!! well I guess I will wait and see then, give it a go, and as I like 11.04, and I'm going to suppose that the changes in Mate for 11.10 (other than performance) will be cosmetic and largely invisible from what is already on screen with Pinguy11.04 Shy

But right now I'm kind of "hung up" on 11.10 Beta, and want to try it, I'm guessing I shall have to back up my bits and pieces and wipe the Drive of everything and do a clean install of 11.10, ( and hopefully then a dual-boot with 11.04) and have the best of both worlds Heart

Why not just install 11.10 next to your 11.04. That way you can skip a few steps there. Of coarse backing up in either case is a good idea.

That is what I did, I am just reformatting the 11.10 partition and reinstalling on that partition, to keep up with pinguys releases. That way 11.04 is left alone.

I must admit I have not booted into 11.04 for days though

Solstice_Bahai, as what Kanotquad said is exactly what I did and I've booted backwards, forwards and everywhichway, 11.04, 10.10 and 11.10

it does take a bit of getting use to 11.10, BUT it does grow on ya Cool

According to an article in blog.linuxmint.com, MATE and Gnome 3 can run on same PC. i.e. you can have 2 DE and they do not clash, as the libraries are different, but apps have to be ported to MATE. According to Clem, Mint Developer, you wont even know whether you are using Gnome2 or MATE. They behave in similar way. Gnome2 and Gnome3 does not work very well due to library issue. MATE is available for Arch Linux and is a fork of Gnome2.32. AFAIK, MATE developers are more interested in maintaining same version then to frequently changing it. I cannot recall where I have read this.
